S2E & Morningstar: AWS-Based Solutions

S2E|Solutions2Enterprises has recently accomplished a project for one the major banks in the North of Italy, commissioned by Morningstar Italia.

S2E is Morningstar’s technological partner for the development of cloud-based solutions aimed to integrate and extent its Enterprise Components.

Together, they are working to offer SaaS solutions to businesses belonging mainly to the banking & insurance sector, relying on Amazon Web Services ecosystem. The scope is to provide custom solutions, based on a modern, reliable and scalable infrastructure, bringing all the advantages related to AWS public cloud, one the market leaders.

Developing an highly customized solution, integrated with Morningstar’s native tools (OnDemand, X-Ray, etc.), S2E succeeded in building and implementing a vertical solution that satisfies the customer’s needs from different perspectives.

In this experience, S2E achieved the goal to provide Morningstar with data of portfolio-related funds, generated by the bank’s Legacy systems.

The bank’s information is clustered, trascoded and validated in order to populate Morningstar’s databases, allowing a seamless presentation of the bank’s internal data as well as market data, both inside and outside the organization.

Input data from the bank are transferred through SFTP protocol (AWS Transfer Family, S3) while data processing is accomplished through on-demand computing resources (CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Lambda, AWS Batch). Processed data bundles, controls, enrichment, and submission to Morningstar are done through predefined API REST.

The procedure deals with more than 5,000 public financial instruments and a few hundred instruments related to the bank on a daily basis, building many bundles and hundreds of controls, parallelizing the execution on 15 different threads, in order to fulfill the whole dataset processing within 15 minutes.
